DISCOVERY FISHING
Fishing can be practiced everywhere there is water; In streams, rivers, canals, deltas, ponds, or in seas…each place has its specificities and needs different equipment. In the sea, as in freshwater, there 2 main types of fishing: Fishing with natural bait, and fishing with lures (artificial bait)
A rod, a line, a float, a hook, bait…one doesn’t need much to discover the joys of fishing. The rod is the extension of the arms. It allows discrete presentation of a natural bait or lure at the end of a line, to trick a fish.
Each technique has its model, a larger or smaller size and different action.
Telescopic still fishing rod
Particularly suited to fishing with natural bait, small telescopic still rods between 1.50 m and 5 metres are called "mitraillete or gardonette"
These rods are made to stand up to frequent casting and striking. They are not very bulky, able to be retracted and then re-extended with a flip of the hand. Light, they are perfectly suited for fishing big fish (roach fish, bleak, gudgeons..).
Longer rods (up to 9 metres) can be used to meet the needs of anglers (distance and depth).
Casting rod
Particularly suited to fishing with lures, this has line guide rings and a reel door. It can be telescopic or have several elements. One can use it for fishing for larger fish: carnivorous fish, by using lures but also live bait (little fish that attract carnivorous fish).
Rod action : How the rod works when it is used
There are 3 types of actions :
- Fast action (or rapid) : The rod bends in the top third of the blank
- Semi-parabolic action (or medium) : The rod bends in the top 2/3rds of the blank
- Parabolic action : The rod bends along the complete length of the blank
Reels
The reel used with a ringed rod. This allows use of line held in reserve to cast farther or work larger fish
For casting fishing the most commonly used model is the fixed spool. It’s not the bobbin which turns to wind the line but a pick-up, when you turn the handle.
The Line
Mounting the line requires a minimum of equipment: Line, float, hook, sinkers…Here is a more useful insight.
Line
The line is composed of a nylon strand, its resistance depending on its diameter, adapted to the fish sought: 8/100 millimetre is enough for small fish, 28/100 will work for larger fish
To begin, the ideal is to procure completely mounted lines (line + hook + sinker/float), which greatly simplifies your first step in fishing.
Here is an insight into the 2 major types of lines that exist :
-
Sea line -
Freshwater line
Floats
This is a touch indicator, and it sinks when the fish has swallowed the bait
Sinkers
Spherical and slit sinkers which are pinched onto the line, serving as a weight to balance the small floats.
Heavier, the olive or Arlesey sinkers serve as weights to balance large lines or to settle bait on the bottom of the water.
The hook
This is used to catch the fish by the mouth. It can be a simple, double, or triple hook, baited beforehand.
Swivels
These are used to limit twists in the line and allow two lines to be easily linked.
Lures
This is artificial bait. There are several kinds: Spoons, minnow crankbaits, and leadheads.
They are used to fish for carnivorous fish (perch, pike, pike perch, trout, black bass) We cast them and reel them in.

The disgorger
This is an indispensable tool for delicately removing a hook from the mouth of a fish.
The sounding rod
This is also an indispensable tool to precisely determine the depth and adjust your line to an optimum length.
